Hotel Edda IKI Laugarvatn is located in Laugarvatn, in South Iceland. Laugarvatn is a village of about 170 inhabitants. During the school year, the population is higher, as Laugarvatn is an educational centre, with a primary/lower secondary school, a high school, and the sports faculty of the Iceland University of Education.
Vigdalaug (Sacred Pool) at Laugarvatn is a geothermal spring which is reputed to have healing powers. Tradition says that when the Icelanders adopted the Christian religion in 1000 AD, by a decision of parliament at Thingvellir, some of them chose to be baptised in the warm waters of this spring, and not in the chilly lake water at ingvellir.
About 5-6 km west of Laugarvatn is Laugarvatnsvellir (Laugarvatn Plains), a commonly-travelled route in olden times. The Gjabakkavegur upland route to Thingvellir passes through Laugarvatnsvellir. Two caves along the route were inhabited by a couple in the early part of the 20th century, until 1922; the woman gave birth to a child when she was living in the cave.
Laugarvatn offers a beautiful environment for visitors to enjoy, and is within easy reach of many of the principal attractions of South Iceland, such as Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot springs, the old parliamentary site at Thingvellir and Skalholt Cathedral. Hotel Edda IKI Laugarvatn has a pleasant, romantic restaurant overlooking the lake. The emphasis is on light snacks during the day, and a splendid menu for dinner. At breakfast, guests can feast on an excellent buffet. The restaurant seats 60.
* Good facilities for smaller conferences: three classrooms. Swimming pool is only five minutes’ walk from the hotel: splendid 25-metre open-air pool with two hot pots. Adjacent to the swimming pool, at the shore of the lake, is the famous Laugarvatn natural sauna, fed by a hot spring. Excellent sports facilities nearby. Boat and sailboard hire on the lake near the sauna.
* Angling at Laugarvatn: trout can be caught in the lake. Angling permits are also available at Lake Apavatn and local rivers. Permits for sale from landowners in Laugardalur. Horse hire at the Geysir hot springs; horseback trips to suit all. 9-hole golf course at Middalur, 5 km from the hotel. |
